Glenn Gould plays Gibbons: Lord Salisbury Pavane & Galliard

Edited captions are available for this item. Select 'English', not 'English (auto-generated)'.

There are four recordings by Gould of the Lord Salisbury Pavan, and the first three of these are acccompanied by the Galliard.

0:00 remarks on Gibbons from 'Chemins de la Musique', 1974.
Massey Hall, Toronto, January 17, 1956:
0:56 Pavan
4:32 Galliard
This earliest recording we have of Gould's Gibbons is straightforward and unornamented.
New York, Columbia recording, August 1, 1968:
6:16 Pavan
10:20 Galliard
Some ornamentation, especially in section 2 of the Pavan, and quite a bit of 'strumming' of chords.
Toronto, Radio Broadcast, December 26, 1968:
12:11 Pavan
19:10 Galliard
Only a few months later (though I cannot rule out that these could be outtakes from the Columbia sessions), and there is a new conception of the piece: the ornamentation is now profuse. Even the written out ornaments are modified. Each section of the Pavan is repeated with contrasting dynamics and ornaments.
Toronto, 'Chemins de la Musique', Television, 1974:
20:53 Pavan
Some abrupt and pointillistic eighth notes to begin, but this idea is not carried through.
