Ferreting-Do you REALLY need a dog to catch rabbits...

A lot of feedback from those that either watch these films, my demonstrations at shows or contact me via my website (www.pakefieldferrets.co.uk) is centered around my lurchers. They ask, do you really need a dog to go ferreting? My answer is simple and straight to the point. No, not really, but it does help. I ferret a lot and my dogs are never far from my side. They are my eyes, ears and best buddies all rolled into one. Unfortunately, sometimes I work in a environment where having them ferreting isn’t necessarily the best option. It is of course the finest sporting pursuits on the hills, moors and open farmland but where sensitive building, traffic management systems or livestock are involved, sometimes it is best to leave them be.

That is why we all have a different ferreting philosophy. A mindset, a way of thinking that ever mutates to gain the right result for whoever is ferreting. It may not suit you or even me tomorrow but on this day in question I decided on my tactics and cracked on. I wanted to highlight this fact. We were amongst spooky livestock, and to be fair, we probably caught more without dogs than we would have with. Of course, the dogs mark, catch, retrieve, hold and tell us of the impending action but they also alter the reaction of the rabbits and that of the animals around us. Watch and find out how we got on.
