A look at M23's advances and global efforts to restore peace in eastern DRC

In early 2025, the M23 rebel group seized Goma and Bukavu, escalating the conflict. Before Goma’s fall, North Kivu’s interim governor was killed by sniper fire, triggering a mass exodus of civilians and soldiers into Rwanda. As M23 forces entered central Goma, chaos ensued, including a major prison break and the surrender of hundreds of foreign military contractors to UN forces. In response, President Felix Tshisekedi delivered a defiant address on January 29. Meanwhile, diplomatic efforts to secure peace are intensifying as the M23 rebels continue their advances in eastern DRC.
