Wyoming Overland Route & Colorado Joint Line from Railroading in the West 1990!
Union Pacific's Overland Route was thick with intermodal and other freight trains on this transcontinental route between Tie Siding and Green River, Wyoming. These trains were pulled by classic C30-7, C36-7 and SD40-2 diesels, as well as C40-8W and SD60M units, the latest in diesel technology at the time. In contrast to fast trains moving across the desert, coal trains and other heavy tonnage climb the scenic Palmer Divide on Colorado's Denver-Pueblo Joint Line. Shared by three railroads, Joint Line motive power included former Denver & Rio Grande Western and Southern Pacific SD40T-2 and SD45T-2 tunnel motors. The Santa Fe Railway operated C30-7 and SD40-2 diesels, as did the Burlington Northern Railroad. Leased units for Burlington Northern were SD60 diesels from General Motors, and General Electric's LMX B39-8 locomotives. The Rio Grande and BN were also still using cabooses on the end of their trains before phasing them out.
