BN UP Amtrak Columbia & Cowlitz GP7 in Pacific Northwest 1991 (Part 10.4 of 4) GP39M SD40-2 F40PH! Trains Across America 1991 opens with the Chicago & North Western in Iowa, and then the Elgin Joliet & Eastern in Illinois. On the East Coast, Maryland Area Rail Commuter (MARC) utilized rebuilt streamliner F9PH diesels and GP39H2 units to haul local passenger trains throughout Maryland and West Virginia. CSX and predecessor Chessie System also conquered the former Baltimore & Ohio through the Appalachian Mountains, utilizing its fleet of GP30, GP40-2, SD40-2, SD40E, SD50 and C40-8 diesels to haul freight. In Pennsylvania, Conrail trains followed the Susquehanna River. Their diesel fleet included B36-7, B40-8, C40-8, GP40-2, SD40-2 and SD50 units. In the Midwest, transcontinental mainline freights raced across the prairie on the C&NW and Union Pacific railroads. These railroads often shared motive power between Chicago, Illinois, and North Platte, Nebraska, including C40-8, C40-8W, SD40-2 and SD60M diesels. Then a brief visit to Colorado's Front Range, where Burlington Northern coal trains, pulled by C30-7 and SD40-2 units, conquered the Palmer Divide on the shared Joint Line. Cabooses were still being utilized at this time. Finally, trains in the Pacific Northwest conclude this adventure, with Burlington Northern and Union Pacific freights operating along the scenic Columbia River gorge. Amtrak's "Pioneer" followed the UP route, pulled by classic F40PH passenger engines, in the shadow of Mount Hood. Also, a high wooden trestle, owned by the Columbia & Cowlitz logging railroad, made it possible for the railroad's GP7 diesels to interchange rail cars with Burlington Northern, in Kelso, Washington.
