“You know I can introduce you if you want me to?” a familiar voice cut through my thoughts.
“Huh?” I spun around to face the person who spoke.
Emma stood looking at me with a twinkle in her eye, her gym bag slung over one shoulder, “I said, star boy, that I could introduce you to Aria if you want. Instead of you standing there looking at her as though she’s a slab of meat that you are ready to devour.”

I felt my face turn red. I had been deep in thought watching Aria practice with the cheerleading squad, but before I could reply, Jerry, the team captain, burst through the double doors of the gymnasium.
“Are we just going to stand here or are we going to practice? We have a junior championship to win,” Jerry said as he put me in a playful headlock and ruffled my hair. Jerry had been my best friend since the third grade. He was also the best swimmer on our team.
“Let’s go team!!” I shouted as I followed Jerry and the rest of my teammates into the swimming pool area.
“Let’s go Liam!” I heard my mother scream from the stands.
I got into position at one end of the pool. Today was the National Junior Championship Mixed Swimming Competition. It was up to me to bring the trophy home. The whistle blew and I jumped into the water. I touched the wall, and I breathed a sigh of relief as the final race was over. I looked up at the scoreboard anxiously. A few seconds later the list of names and scores was displayed. I won the race in 59.23 seconds! I came out of the pool and celebrated with my teammates.
“Great job, team!” Coach Carter, also my dad said, “I say this calls for a little air and relaxation this weekend. What say ye?!”
“Yes!” We all shouted simultaneously.
That Saturday my teammates met my dad and me at the dock. My family owned a yacht, and my dad would usually take the team out for fishing trips or just to lounge after competitions.
“Hey, Jerry can you help Liam get the rest of the snacks and drinks out of the tray of the van?”
“Sure, Coach,” Jerry said as he jogged towards the van.
“So, I see Emma invited Aria to the trip?” Jerry said, nudging me, “Do you plan on asking her out?”
I looked over at Aria who was chatting with Emma and the other girls on the shore.
“Well…” I said and my voice trailed off.
“Bro, you’ve been eyeballing Aria for two years, two years! You better make your move quick before I make a move for you,” Jerry said jokingly.
