Transfer Girder vs Direct Column Load Explained||civil engineering||sssirmechanics
This video explains the difference between a Transfer Girder System and a Direct Column Load System in structural engineering.
In the upper part, the load from upper columns is transferred sideways through a heavy reinforced concrete beam called a Transfer Girder. This girder redistributes the load to other supporting columns when lower columns cannot continue directly downward. Transfer girders are commonly used in parking floors, malls, hotels, and high-rise buildings where open space is required.
In the lower part, the column load travels directly from top to foundation without any load diversion. This is called a Direct Column Load Path, which is simpler, more economical, and structurally efficient.
Understanding load paths is one of the most important concepts in civil and structural engineering because safe load transfer ensures stability and strength of the building.
Real-Life Examples
Transfer Girder Real Example
Shopping malls with large open parking areas
High-rise buildings with commercial space at lower floors
Hotels having banquet halls without many columns
Metro stations and airport terminal structures
Buildings where architectural layout changes between floors
Direct Column Load Real Example
Residential buildings
Simple apartment structures
Small office buildings
Warehouses with aligned columns
Regular framed RCC structures
