Anton Dolin - On His Re-Creation of 'Pas de Quatre' in 1941

In this video, Anton Dolin talks about his ‘recreation’ or ‘reconstruction’ (Dolin’s words) of the Romantic ballet ‘Pas de Quatre’ of 1845, which had starred the four great ballerinas of the era: Carlotta Grisi, Marie Taglione, Lucille Grahn and Fanny Cerito.

Dolin’s inspiration to recreate of reconstruct the ballet was A. E. Chalon’s lithograph of the final pose in the ballet with the four ballerinas in a pyramidal shape.

The music of the ballet was eventually found in the British Museum in London by Cyril Beaumont, British dance historian, critic, technical theorist, translator, bookseller, and publisher.

In his ‘recreation’ or ‘reconstruction’, Dolin used the reviews of the critics of the time - the ballet having premiered in July 1845 at His Majesty’s Theatre in London.

Enjoy!
