Autographs and Madeleines

Flicking through some old ballet photographs yesterday I came across the autograph of Dame Alicia Markova and experienced a moment not unlike that of a character in Marcel Proust’s ‘À la recherche du temps perdu’ when tasting a madeleine cake - a flood of involuntary memories containing the essence of my theatre-going past, an essence not engendered in the voluntary partial ones dredged up by intelligence.
