CVAD procedures: Dressing change
A central line or central vascular access device (CVAD) is an IV line that is inserted into a large vein to provide medications, chemotherapy, nutrition or fluids.
For more information, please visit the Interventional Radiology learning hub: https://www.aboutkidshealth.ca/IGT
This video will review the steps required for two people to complete a dressing change of a CVAD, using aseptic non-touch technique (ANTT).
Caregivers of children with a CVAD should review this video with their child’s health-care team before attempting any of these procedures. Before watching this video, please watch the video “CVAD Procedures: Preparing your environment” to learn how to set-up your environment before starting a CVAD procedure.
These instructions are part of a teaching program for families of patients at The Hospital for Sick Children. They are provided in addition to detailed hands-on training. We urge you not to follow these instructions without training and advice from a health-care professional who understands your child’s unique needs. Please also review these instructions with your doctor to check if they are suitable for your situation.
