This happened when I was a child, during a visit to my grandmother's old house in Akita.
We only ever visited during Obon once a year, and when we arrived at her place, I was overjoyed and went out to play with my older brother.

Unlike the city, the air was remarkably fresh.
With the pleasant breeze brushing against me, I ran around the rice fields with my brother.

Then, just as the sun rose to its peak and noon approached, the wind suddenly stopped.
Soon after, a lukewarm breeze began to blow.
I said, "It's already hot enough-why is such a warm wind blowing?"

My brother, however, had been looking off in another direction for a while.
There was a scarecrow in that direction.
When I asked, "What about that scarecrow?" he said, "No, beyond that," and continued to stare intently.

Curious, I also focused my gaze far across the rice fields.
And then-I saw it.

What… is that?
It was hard to tell from far away, but it looked like a white, human-sized figure, writhing and squirming.
There were only rice fields all around, and no people nearby.
It struck me as strange, but I tried to make sense of it:

"Could it be a new kind of scarecrow? That must be it! I've never seen one that moves before-maybe a farmer came up with the idea! It's probably just swaying from the wind we felt earlier!"

My brother seemed convinced by my dead-on reasoning, but his expression quickly changed.
The wind had stopped completely.

Yet, the white figure continued its squirming movements.

My brother said in a shocked tone,
"Hey… it's still moving… what the heck is that?"

He seemed unable to resist his curiosity. He returned home, fetched a pair of binoculars, and came back to the spot.

Excited, he said, "I'll look first, just wait a second," and eagerly pe
