I Lived In An Abandoned House With An Unknown Roommate

IN MAY 27- 28 2008 Yuki was a university student looking for cheap accommodation near the Philosopher's Path. She found a tatami-matted room in an old wooden house with weathered shoji screens and a tiny, overgrown garden. The landlady, an elderly woman with cloudy eyes, welcomed her warmly and mentioned the house was shared with a quiet tenant named "Souta."

"He stays in the back room. Don't worry-he keeps to himself," she said.

Yuki settled in quickly, but Souta was nowhere to be seen. She heard the soft shuffle of slippers in the hallway late at night, sometimes the sound of humming from the far end of the house. Once, her tea mug was mysteriously washed when she left it in the sink.

On the evening of May 27, 2008, she came home to find a folded paper crane placed on her pillow. It was made from an old newspaper dated 1998. On one wing, written in faded ink:

"Don't open the fusuma. I'm still here."

The fusuma-sliding screen door-at the end of the hall had always been slightly ajar, but when Yuki approached it that night, it was sealed shut, as if it hadn't been touched in years.

The next morning, she asked the landlady about Souta. The woman looked confused. "Souta? He passed away in this house ten years ago. That back room... it's been locked since."

Yuki moved out the following week. The crane vanished with her.

But the house still gets rented. And every now and then, a new tenant finds a paper crane-folded perfectly, silently waiting.
