Avoid bilingual dictionaries?

One piece of advice I see out there is that you should ONLY use an English-English dictionary, and not one that translates from your native language.

Now, I totally get the importance of not always wanting to translate directly from your native language. But sometimes, and I would argue most of the time, simply looking up a definition in our native language would make a word instantly ‘click’ in our brains, instead of trying to look up several different English definitions to try and make sense of the word.

So, to build vocabulary, I’m a big believer in using your native language to help you understand words you don’t know in English 😉
