Warren Buffett vs. Michael Burry – Who‘s Right On APPLE?

Q1 is in the books and we patiently waited 45 days to finally look at the updated portfolios of the best investors in the world. And I found a lot of very interesting stock picks in some of the portfolios I follow. The two most noteworthy investments revealed by the SEC 13-F filings are Michael Burry’s $36 million bet against Apple – Burry is effectively shorting Apple – and a $600 million bet on Apple made by Warren Buffett himself. So two legendary investors apparently take opposite positions in Apple's stock. And in this video, I’ll discuss who is likely right on this bet and I’ll show you what Buffett had to say about Apple's stock during the most recent 2022 Berkshire meeting.

Michael Burry leads the investment firm Scion Asset Management and is best known from the movie "The Big Short", and for successfully shorting the housing market and banks before the financial crisis of 2008. As always, Burry has been fairly active and actually invested in a bunch of different stocks. Michael Burry added a lot of stocks to his portfolio including Google, Meta Platforms, and Booking.com. But his biggest bet with a market value of around $36 million is a bet he placed against Apple and that bet accounts for around 18% of Burry’s long positions. Michael Burry is betting against Apple by purchasing so-called put options against Apple shares.

Before we consider why Burry is betting against Apple, especially relative to other tech stocks, let’s first consider Warren Buffett’s investing activity and why he is taking an opposite position when it comes to Apple. If we consider Berkshire Hathaway’s 13-F filing, we can see that Buffett bought even more Apple shares in Q1, adding another 3,7 million shares to Berkshire's already largest position. Buffett actually spoke about this investment in Apple during the Berkshire Hathaway 2022 shareholder meeting and I'll show you a short sequence from the meeting in this video.

So clearly, Buffett and Burry take opposite positions here. But who’s right on this bet on/against Apple? Buffett or Burry? Burry’s bet against Apple is obviously much more aggressive, considering that it is the largest position in his portfolio. Buffett on the other hand, added just a tiny bit to his already very large position and it’s important to point out that although Buffett and Burry seemingly take opposite positions here, BOTH can actually be right. This may be surprising to some of you. How can they both be right if one is short Apple and one is long? Well, I discuss this idea in this video.
