The Birth of Gettysburg Tourism
Within days of the armies leaving Gettysburg, the town and surrounding areas were inundated with visitors. Many were here to help the wounded or recover the bodies of loved ones killed in the fighting, but many were sightseers. And as the weeks, months and years passed, the stream of early tourism only increased. But these visitors needed places to stay, to eat, and a guide for their travels across the battlefield. Coming out of the devastation of 1863, the local citizens responded, and the tourist industry was established. Join ACHS Historians Tim Smith and Andrew Dalton as we explore some of the early commercial and tourism enterprises at Gettysburg!
