Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin told CNBC on Monday that lawmakers should not allow fears over the size of the nation’s deficit or the Federal Reserve’s balance sheet to delay additional stimulus relief. Mnuchin, who with White House chief of staff Mark Meadows has led the administration’s Covid-19 relief negotiations, said the economic crisis warrants extraordinary stimulus from both Congress and the Fed. He explained on CNBC’s Squawk Box how “now is not the time to worry about shrinking the deficit or shrinking the Fed balance sheet.” He said that “there was a time when the Fed was shrinking the balance sheet and coming back to normal and the good news is that gave them a lot of room to increase the balance sheet, which they did.” But he explains how right no he thinks “the monetary policy working with fiscal policy and what we were able to get done in an unprecedented way with Congress is the reason the economy is doing better,” and is why they need more stimulus passed now. .

Mnuchin struck a more compromising tone Monday and said he’s still willing to work with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on a new deal. He explained how “I think there’s many areas of this where is an agreement between the Democrats and the Republicans, and some of the areas we do have differences on the amounts.” But , he goes on to say that “I will continue to work on this: I’ve told the speaker I’m available any time to negotiate, no conditions.” This is a huge change from before because there were always conditions about the total price tag or what they would and would not be willing to include I the bill, but now Mnuchin is saying he is willing to sit down and negotiate with no conditions at all. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin told CNBC Monday that despite what he described as a “great rebound,” there are “clearly” areas of the economy that still need support and that fear over adding to the national debt shouldn’t prevent Congress from passing another stimulus bill. 

The Treasury Secretary said he expected the Problem Solvers Caucus to propose a stimulus proposal later Monday; however, they were still working on the finishing details so we should see this bill proposed today. Mnuchin reiterated that he and President Trump are both in favor of more support for the economy, and he explained how he hopes this new bill will address some of the most hard hit sectors right now like hotels, travel, small businesses and restaurants. One of the fundamental factors of the breakdown in stimulus negotiations over the last weeks and months has been the price tag. However, Mnuchin is starting to say that we need to spend more money and praised the Federal Reserve's response to the pandemic, saying the dual-pronged response rescued the economy from a collapse earlier this year.

Ultimately he explained how “there is a compromise if the speaker [of the House] is willing to move forward.” He said how “he is somewhat concerned that she's afraid any deal would be good for the president, and that "politics" could be "getting in the way" of a deal.” But Mnuchin reiterated that he is willing to negotiate and find a consensus and now it is up to Nancy Pelosi because he has told her that he is available anytime to negotiation, no conditions,"
