The great white shark (Carcharodon carcharias), also known as the great white, white shark or "white pointer", is a species of large mackerel shark which can be found in the coastal surface waters of all the major oceans.
The saltwater crocodile, also known as saltie, estuarine or Indo-Pacific crocodile, is the largest of all living reptiles, as well as the largest terrestrial predator in the world.
Due to the obvious differences between these two animals, I am forced to analyze this fight in two different situations: on shore, in shallower waters and offshore, in very deep water. So we will start with the first of these situations, the same situation that was taken into account in the legend with which we started this episode. I think you all agree that fighting in shallow water favors the crocodile. Although it is very well adapted to aquatic life, the crocodile is still a terrestrial animal and this is its favorite environment. In shallower water, the crocodile can benefit from all the adaptations that millions of years of evolution have given it. On the other hand, while the crocodile likes this environment perfectly, the shark is clearly disadvantaged, being a 100% aquatic animal, which prefers deep waters that give it more freedom of movement. One thing I forgot to mention, but which is very important in this context is the fact that the sharks can only drift away from objects directly in front of them because their fins do not allow them to move in the tail-first direction. Thus its superior maneuverability will suffer in these conditions. My opinion is that in shallower water, the crocodile has some essential advantages. First of all, it could make its usual waiting game, standing glued to the bottom of the water. Thus its eyes oriented above can help it see in time any attack and in addition, its belly, the most vulnerable part of its body, would not be exposed. Then, the shallow water will become cloudy, allowing it to hide from the shark's eyes in its most vulnerable moments, when it will have to rise to the surface to breathe. The fight in the shallow water is the one that suits the crocodile the most, so I consider that the result of the fight in our legend is the most probable. If the fight takes place off the ocean, in very deep water, I think the fighters' chances will be reversed. In this case, the shark will have on its side all the advantages that made it one of the most successful predators of the seas. I have already told you that Great White masters many attack techniques, and in this situation it will be able to try them all, until it finds the right one. On the other hand, Saltwater Crocodiles, although very well adapted to aquatic life, will have a big disadvantage. Its need to rise to the surface to breathe is its greatest weakness. In addition, the eyes above its head, one of the adaptations that have made it perhaps the most feared hunter on earth, will prevent it from seeing what is happening beneath it as it fills its lungs with air. Remember that the attack from below is one of the preferred ways of shark hunting, which uses this method in the case of seals as well. It can take advantage of its astonishing speed and thus launch destructive attacks, targeting exactly the most vulnerable part of the crocodile: the belly. It is true that the crocodile will also try to bite its opponent, but I have two reasons to believe that it is less likely. First of all, I'm sure the shark is faster in the water, even if some sources disagree. Second, the shape of the crocodile's jaws will not allow it to bite as fast as the shark can...
