Gruesome massacre in Sumy: Russian army relied on meat assaults

Dmytro Zhmailo, co-founder and executive director of the Ukrainian Center for Security and Cooperation, expressed confidence during a broadcast that Russian forces are unlikely to break through to Sumy in the near future.
“They do have a numerical advantage in the area,” he said, “but given their reliance on ‘meat assaults’, sending large numbers of troops into heavy fire, they're more likely to deplete their forces than advance successfully.” He added that frustration among Russian soldiers toward their commanders is growing. Zhmailo also warned of another threat: while a direct assault on the city seems unlikely, Russian forces aim to move close enough to hit Sumy with rocket artillery and drones. “The goal is to make life in Sumy unbearable,” he said. “It’s a key logistical hub for our defense, and the enemy wants to destroy it from a distance.” According to him, the situation on the Sumy border is currently very tense.
He pointed out that Russia’s current actions mirror plans laid out a year ago, which is why Ukrainian General Syrsky launched the Kursk operation — to delay Russian advances. “The destruction we now see in Sumy was previously inflicted by Russian forces in Kursk; that same scenario is unfolding here,” Zhmailo said. He explained that Ukraine had been able to hold ground in the Kursk region while it had long-range weapons. Once those supplies dwindled, Russian forces, with the help of guided bombs, heavy artillery, and advanced drones, broke through into Sumy region, forcing Ukrainian troops to retreat from damaged positions. Despite this, Zhmailo noted there have been no significant new Russian gains in recent days, though heavy fighting continues. Russian troops are also attempting to push Ukrainian forces out of the Kursk area, but Ukrainian units are targeting their logistics in an effort to slow the offensive. Zhmailo concluded by saying that Russia does not appear to have a clear or coherent strategy for Sumy. “They’ll keep moving forward where they can, then later declare the operation complete, most likely when they’re exhausted.”
