Russian dictator “not mentally stable”, ruins Russia’s reputation in a crazy move

Israeli military expert David Sharp has criticized Russia’s recent attack on Ukraine’s Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant ahead of Munich Security Council. Pointing to the fact that the topic of nuclear weapons is quite sensitive, Sharp said the Kremlin has long been warned against using them. Yet, on the eve of peace talks when Russia should have presented itself in the best possible light, Putin ordered an attack on a nuclear facility in Ukraine. In his words, this move defies logic and will only further damage Russia’s reputation in the West. Speaking on OdesaLIVE, Sharp commented on the Russian drone strike, emphasizing that deliberately targeting the fourth reactor unit was reckless. While the attack may not have posed an immediate, catastrophic threat, it demonstrated a dangerous disregard for nuclear safety. Given the symbolic and sensitive nature of the Chornobyl site, such an act raises doubts about Putin’s judgment rather than intimidating Ukraine or the West. Instead of achieving strategic goals, Russia has undermined its own international standing. Sharp further remarked that from a global perspective, Russia essentially "shot itself in the foot." The attack was deliberate yet puzzling, especially considering Moscow had previously avoided such actions. He doubted whether this signaled reluctance to negotiate or an alternative strategy, suggesting that upcoming diplomatic efforts, and the influence of figures like Donald Trump would determine Russia’s next steps. The incident involved a Russian Shaheed drone carrying a high-explosive warhead, which struck the containment structure shielding Reactor No. 4, the same reactor responsible for the 1986 nuclear disaster. The strike caused fire and compromised the shelter’s integrity. Fortunately, personnel at the plant managed to prevent a greater catastrophe. An anonymous employee revealed to Le Monde that had dismantling of the sarcophagus already begun, the consequences could have been far worse. The containment structure, known as the "New Safe Confinement," was built in 2016 to facilitate the removal of deteriorating components, but any exposure could lead to heightened radiation risks.
