Designed In 40 Days. Outlived The Company By 50 Years [Avanti Story]

Studebaker Avanti History | American Car Survival Story | Forgotten Classic Cars

In 1962, Studebaker was dying. Their last move — hand Raymond Loewy a house in Palm Springs and 40 days to design something extraordinary. The Avanti had a fibreglass body, disc brakes before Detroit made them standard, and a supercharged V8 that broke 29 land speed records. It wasn't enough. Studebaker shut down in 1966. But the Avanti didn't die. Private buyers purchased the design rights and kept building it for five more decades — same body, different owners, different engines. The car that couldn't save Studebaker refused to disappear without it.

The Motor File uncovers forgotten machines, hidden automotive history, and the real decisions behind the world's most extraordinary cars.
