Flying with a Baby and Toddler | Tips and Hacks (and the BIGGEST LIE people tell you!)

The BIGGEST LIE people tell you about flying with a baby! Plus Carry on packing list for your baby and 21 super useful Tips and Hacks for surviving flying with your baby. I honestly think some of these are genius and wish I had known them before my first flight! I’ve broken it down into booking and boarding, what to pack and general tips and hacks.

Here is a summary of our TOP TIPS for flying with a baby. Lots of LINKS to come...

1 Booking and boarding:
Pick the right time of day for your baby. Short flights morning, long flights at night.
Ring ahead: Check bassinet seats are booked if you need them and toddlers meals confirmed.
If you aren’t using a bassinet then book aisle and window seat - unless the flight is full it is unlikely someone will sit between you. Also try to get seats near the back as it is quieter but avoid the back row where seats may not recline and you may be next to the toilet.
Take a sling: We find these so useful in the airport and on the flight.
If you are travelling with someone decide who’s going to do what and when.
You can take children’s drinks through security but may be asked to take a sip :-)
Take the stroller all the way through the airport.

2 Carry on luggage:
You will generally be allowed at least one extra bag for your baby: Check airline allowances
Remember that baby ID needed - generally passport.
Take lots of nappies, wipes and muzzies
Inflatable nursing pillows are very handy whether you are breastfeeding or not.
Slings and strollers: slings smaller, compact and multi-purpose.
Bring easy to change clothing - e.g. zip up onesies. Remember a good top for yourself and a spare T-shirt.
Bring some toys: Small and familiar. Books and inflatable toys are great. You can also be creative with what is on the plane.
Bring snacks for baby and yourself. Bring some formula.
Stuff sacks and zip lock bags are great for organising things.
Bring a carry on bag with different compartments. If it is small enough you may be allowed to keep it under the seat in front.

3 On the flight
Taking off and landing - feed your baby to help them adjust to the change in pressure.
Use the sick bags great for nappies or dirty clothing.
Some airports have strollers that you can borrow - especially handy if you have a layover.
You should be allowed to take an FAA approved car seat - will probably need to pay for an extra seat - very useful when you get there. This can generally be checked in for free.
Ask which of the toilets has baby changing facilities
Baby changing mats may be handy
Drink plenty of water
Do the exercises to keep blood circulating around your legs
Don’t feel bad, be gentle on yourself and on your baby

Finally: The most FAMILY FRIENDLY airline we have found so far is EasyJet. They are a budget airline based in the UK. They do loads to help families with children and the staff are super attentive and friendly to the needs of parents.
