Kanazawa's Castles and Gardens... and best ramen - Family Road Trip Across Japan, Episode 4

This is episode 4 of our epic road trip around Japan. In this video we visit Kanazawa's historic castle and Kenrokuen gardens, have some of the Kanazawa's best cakes and pastries, coffee and ramen.

After coffee and pulled pork sandwiches at Curio Espresso & Vintage Design, Kanazawa's other best coffee (the other was Blue Monday), we go to Kanazawa Castle and gardens. Unlike Matsumoto and Himeji castles Kanazawa castle isn't entirely original. It has mostly been reconstructed over the years since most of it was destroyed by fire in the 1600s and again in the 1750s.

We wandered the grounds enjoying the mild sunny weather after the previous days of snow and rain. The sakura, cherry blossoms, were blooming like blooming things.

We ducked into Kanazawa's Prefectural Museum of Art to consume some art. Cakes and pastries at the highly regarded cafe in the the museum - Le Musee De H.

After pigging out on cakes and iced coffees we crossed the road to Kenrokuen Gardens. Kenrokuen is an expansive garden and parkland of almost 10 hectares - 100,000 square metres. For the metrically challenged that’s about 18 football fields. So reasonably big. Kenrokuen is considered one of the Three Great Gardens of Japan.

In the park there are around 8000 trees. Something like 180 varieties including the finally blooming Sakura. We wandered the gardens ogling the millions of trees and flowers. We kept tripping over wedding parties. I reckon every couple getting married that week in Kanazawa were having photo shoots in the park. It is a perfect place for it. The gardens are beautiful.

After the park we trekked back into town looking for yakitori. Of course they were all closed or fully booked so we had ramen at Uguisu Ramen. If it wasn't the best ramen in Kanazawa I'll eat my hat - if they cook it I definitely would.

After a quick game or two at a games arcade we called it a night and our second full day in Kanazawa was done.
