Takachiho Gorge, Kyushu - the best somen noodles and steak ever - Family Road Trip Across Japan, Episode 14

This is episode 14 of our epic road trip around Japan. In this video we are leave city of Matsuyama in Ehime Prefecture on the island of Shikoku and head to Takachiho in Miyazaki Prefecture on the beautiful island of Kyushu.

After breakfast in Matsuyama we drove to the port of Yawatahama for the nearly 3 hour ferry cruise to Usuki in Kyushu. After landing in Usuki we drove an hour or so to a road side stop at Kitakata Yotchimiroya and bought the sweetest "little" oranges - and a few other snacks. Then it was only another hour to Takachiho where we checked into our ryokan - B&B Ukigumo. We'd booked a room for four and when the owner found out the kids were so young he gave us a discount. Amazing, only in Japan!

We'd spent around 6 hours travelling so we needed a good hearty meal so we decided on Yakiniku, BBQ, at Nagomi Steak Restaurant. Takachiho is in Miyazaki Prefecture and the region is known for having some of Japan's best wagyu beef. Nagomi's steak was sensational. And cheap for wagyu.

The next day we explored Takachiho Gorge where we snacked on mitarashi dango, ogled at the spectacular Manai Falls watefall, deafened by the Takachiho Spring Festival Parade, rowed a boat under the waterfall, fed some fish, ate some fish and some of the best somen noodles ever, ate ice creams and and... hmmm. We certainly packed a lot into our visit to Takachiho Gorge. So it was no surprise that when we drove out to Amaniwato-jinja, another shrine further up the valley from Takachiho, we arrived too late. We'll have to visit Amaniwato in the next video.

On the way back from Amaniwato we stop at an Inari shrine for a few minutes before heading back into Takachiho for dinner at Marathon-Tei. A marathon themed restaurant run by a lovely older couple who served up some hearty, excellent and very cheap comfort food.

Next time we will visit Amaniwato-jinja early enough to visit the cave shrine. Then we leave Takachiho and visit Mount Aso on the way to Kurokawa Onsen. Mount Aso had conveniently started erupting the day before so keep an eye out for that video, but in the meantime I hope you enjoy Episode 14 of our family road trip across Japan.
