How dirty do drinking water bottles get if left unwashed?
Water bottles… just how dirty can they get if you don’t wash them?
We headed to the Sydney Water Labs to find out…
We tested all bottles for E. coli and other bacteria in our West Ryde Labs.
We measured for:
- ATP = Adenosine triphosphate (it’s a source of energy for cells) and represents living biomass in our tests.
- HPC = Heterotrophic Plate Count and it measures general bacteria on an agar plate.
Our findings: all bottles had medium to high levels of bacteria prior to washing. Negligible E. coli was detected in all bottles. The Sydney Water sample was completely clean and free of bacteria.
The good news: once all the bottles were washed, they were perfectly safe to drink from.
So make sure to wash your bottle if it’s been unused for a while!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
We conduct around 500,000 tests in our labs every year across all of our products.
Our water quality monitoring program comprises 70 different analytical tests to confirm your drinking water is high quality and safe. They include tests for taste and odour, colour, micro-organisms and chemical content.
We collect and test samples taken from source to tap, including lakes and rivers, our filtration plants and at homes and businesses.
