It’s another bruising day for Keir Starmer as Sir Olly Robbins, the former top Foreign Office official sacked over the Peter Mandelson vetting row, has broken his silence in explosive evidence to MPs - accusing Number 10 of applying “constant pressure” to push the appointment through before proper checks were completed.

In a dramatic Committee hearing, Robbins suggested Downing Street didn’t even expect Mandelson to be vetted, failed to consult the Foreign Office before announcing his role as US ambassador, and created an “atmosphere of pressure” and “constant chasing” to get approval over the line.
