In full: Senior official faces Mandelson vetting Committee over latest Starmer scandal

A senior official at the Cabinet Office will face questions from MPs over the Mandelson scandal.

Cat Little, the civil servant who first informed Sir Keir Starmer that Lord Mandelson had failed vetting checks last week, will appear before the foreign affairs committee at 9.30am.

Ms Little was told about the issue the previous month but consulted Government lawyers before passing on information to Sir Keir.

She is expected to support the Prime Minister’s account of events and criticise the Foreign Office for not telling Sir Keir about the vetting failure at the time of Lord Mandelson's appointment.

Sir Olly Robbins was sacked from his top Foreign Office job last week over the scandal.

Meanwhile, Sir Keir is fighting for his political survival, with even Cabinet loyalists turning on him in recent days.

When asked on Thursday how long Sir Keir had left in No 10, Alex Norris, a Home Office minister, told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme: “Well, Keir Starmer's our Prime Minister.”

Challenged on his failure to answer the question, Mr Norris replied: “He was elected at the previous election for a five-year term. That’s– He will be the Prime Minister.”

Sir Keir will face Prime Minister’s Questions at noon under intense pressure over his decision to fire Sir Olly.
