455. Burrell Traction Engine | Scratch Built | 4” Scale

This single cylinder, agricultural engine based on a 1926 model built by Charles Burrell & Sons of Thetford, Norfolk was scratch built over a three-year period between 2014 and 2017. Engines of this type were used for driving farm machinery, fired by coal and operated at 100 lbs steam pressure.

Find out more about how this magnificent small-scale engine was built. Apart from the boiler, all castings, fabrications and steel work were machined by its maker.

See it in action on the rally field at Westonzoyland Pumping Station Museum, Nr Bridgwater, Somerset, home of the first steam powered pumping station on the Somerset Levels, established in 1830. Now a Museum of Steam Power and Land Drainage, housing a fascinating collection of stationary engines and pumps, and 2' narrow gauge railway. Open every Sunday throughout the year. For full details and steaming dates please go to www.wzlet.org.

PLEASE NOTE: ‘Steam on the Levels’ is held on Saturday 17th and Sunday 18th May in 2025.
