Vlog #1: Moon Photography and Post Processing
In this tutorial, I discuss how I take images of the moon using my Sony a7iii Camera with the Sony 200-600mm lens. Using the crop sensor mode on the camera, I am able to reach and extra 1.5x to have a total focal length of 900mm using this setup. Additionally, this tutorial will go over how I use various settings on the camera such as ISO, aperture, and shutter speed to take images. Finally, I will go over how I use Lightroom to process images after I take them. I recently posted an Instagram Story and several people reached out asking for a tutorial on how to shoot the moon and how I process images after and so here we are!
*** Gear Used In This Tutorial ***
- Sony a7iii Camera Body
- Sony 200-600mm Lens
- Manfrotto Element Tripod
- Sony a6000 for video footage
I am based on the beautiful island of Maui in Hawai'i and have access to very dark skies compared to most people that live in larger cities. Often times I am shooting in a bortel 2 or 3 (on a scale of 1 to 9) and feel very fortunate to live in paradise and have such dark skies to shoot from. I started shooting the night sky by accident and since I have started, it seems that I am not able to stop! Maui Astrophotography was created in hopes that I can help teach others how to shoot the night sky with easy tutorials and easy instructions to follow. As I have learned, astrophotography can be really challenging and at times complicated, though once you have a general understanding of how to use your camera settings to capture the night sky, it's all fun after that! I hope that this information is helpful to you and please feel free to reach out with any questions! As a beginner astrophotographer, I am looking forward to sharing my experiences with you and learning from others along the way!
