Vlog 3: Behind The Scenes- Photographing a Full Moon and Helicopter Silhouette

In this behind the scenes video, witness the full moon rise above Mt. Haleakala and the cloud line on Maui. In this photo session, I have coordinated with my friend and helicopter pilot, Nick Moran from Go Fly Maui, LLC to see if we can capture a beautiful silhouette of his Robinson R44 Helicopter in the center of the rising moon. While I am not, by any means, a mathematician or astrophysicist (or someone who even went to college), I wanted to try to get this unique shot by working with the pilot to perfectly align where he can be positioned in relationship to where I was set up. In theory it would be great if I could move around though with an extreme telephoto lens, it is best to set up well ahead of time and have the helicopter maneuver accordingly. I had a very basic idea of what I could do to help better direct the pilot, though Nick’s skill level in getting his aircraft to where it needed to be play a key role in the success of getting the images I wanted. I hope that you enjoy this short clip that I put together - I am quite new to photography and film making so please accept my apologies in advance for some of the video quality!

I am based on the beautiful island of Maui in Hawai'i and have access to very dark skies on a regular basis compared to most people that live in larger cities. Often times I am shooting in a bortel 2 or 3 (on a scale of 1 to 9) and feel very fortunate to live in paradise and have such dark skies to shoot from. I started shooting the night sky by accident and since I have started, it seems that I am not able to stop! Maui Astrophotography was created in hopes that I can help teach others how to shoot the night sky with easy tutorials and easy instructions to follow. I am a huge believer that educating and helping others thrive in photography will also help me succeed as well. As I have learned, astrophotography can be really challenging and really complicated at first, though once you have a general understanding of how to use your camera settings compared to other forms of photography, capturing the night sky is all fun after that! I hope that this information is helpful to you and please feel free to reach out with any questions! As a beginner astrophotographer, I am looking forward to sharing my experiences with you and learning from others along the way!
