Russia-Ukraine standoff: Putin calls situation in Donbass "genocide," says he does not want war

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday called the situation in east Ukraine’s breakaway region of Donbass a “genocide,” stating that he would like to see the situation there resolved through the Minsk peace process.

At a joint news conference with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Putin said Russia had decided to partially withdraw troops from their positions near the Ukraine border. He added that he sees room for further discussion with the West on Moscow’s security concerns.

He claimed Russia was told Ukraine would not join NATO in the near future, but that he did not believe those assurances were enough to resolve the situation at Ukraine’s border.

Tensions have been high in recent weeks amid fears Russia may invade Ukraine, with that country’s president speculating earlier this week it could happen as early as Wednesday.
