Octember 2023 Failure # 5, Part 2 - Jay's Revenge Against The Machine, Growing The Partition To 60GB
Originally recorded October 12, 2023.
You know there was no way I was going to let the machine win at its games. A good technician will always find a way. This one really angered me, because everything was right there, I had done this plenty of times before, there's absolutely no reason why this shouldn't work. I didn't sleep well that night. This really bothered me. I had to be victorious.
I had tried booting that burned copy of GPartEd on a few other machines and they all had the exact same issue. Hmm. Bad disc or bad ISO image? Bad ISO is unlikely, but I suppose possible.
I needed to try to burn a new copy. There was only 1 problem with that--the power supply that powered that drive had died, so I didn't have easy access to it. I thought, well, it's been a minute since I left Tiny Middle, I bet there's a new version of it out. Maybe I can download that and see if it will work.
I didn't want to waste another blank CD, so I found an ancient CD-RW that burns at a maximum of only 4X, if anyone even remembers CD speeds; if not, 1X is 150KB/sec, so 4X is 600KB/sec, not exactly quick. I tried it on a couple of other systems and it booted. Took a LONG time to boot on all of them. Perhaps due to the CD-RW? I don't know, I haven't tried burning a new copy.
Oh and the old drive that I imaged, and placed back in the machine? It lasted all of about 2 hours before it started vibrating again. No more, end of the road for that drive. Fortunately it spun up one last time and I was able to copy the data back once again. I'm sure for short bursts, that drive will likely work. But it's not very useful.
After TEN minutes, this machine finally was able to boot GPartEd, and I grew the partition out to the full size of the drive in mere seconds. All that, for that.
On the flip side, I happened to notice a replacement power supply that I could use in place of the one that went bad, so I was able to get my drive back online again, and everything there was intact.
All in all, I achieved the absolute best outcome out of this fail. Everything is back up and running, and I still use that machine practically every evening. Side bonus: The performance of that replacement drive is better than the old one, so there has been a slight speed increase.
