I Stopped Using CASCADE Dishwasher Detergent, And Here's What Happened...

Someone gave me this container of Cascade dishwasher detergent "ActionPacs" because they claim it didn't work (well) in their machine. While I consider this to be user error, it was gifted nonetheless.

So I tried it out in my dishwasher, and it did achieve reasonably good results. Difference in about 25 years between the original owner's machine and mine. However, since these are designed to be "toss and go", it should work with a modern machine. I'm sure with a different user, they would have worked fine.

But at what cost????? And what are you getting for your money? These "ActionPacs" have 3 chambers in them with 3 different color liquids. Nowhere does it explain that purple has this function, green has this function, and blue has that function. Chances are good that each one is the very same liquid, just colored differently. This pack has a "warehouse club" value (a paid-membership value, that is, it costs you money to even be able to buy it, not accounted for in this video) of $23. But still, what are you getting for your money?

On the package, it boasts that Cascade is the #1 detergent, recommended by many different manufacturers. The reason why it says that is due to CO-MARKETING AGREEMENTS. That means each company is lining the pockets of the others. Cascade is the #1 detergent on the market, otherwise known as the "Leading National Brand", because THEY PAID FOR IT TO BE #1, NOT BECAUSE IT ACTUALLY IS!!!!! So your hard-earned dollars are simply paying for their advertising and marketing, and to keep them as "#1". By buying this product, you support false advertising!

Is it a good product? Yes. Does it work well? Yes, when used as directed. So I stopped using it.

Aren't there a number of different brands of dishwasher detergent out there? Have you ever tried any of them, and used them as directed? The answer is yes, and probably not. Most people buy Cascade because their mother always bought Cascade, and never had a problem with it. You need to think for yourself as an individual, and try products for yourself, to see how they work.

So I went to Target and I bought their cheapest detergent, the "Smartly" brand dishwasher detergent powder. I used it as directed. And the dishes not only come out clean, but sparkling, just as you'd hope would happen. Not to mention, with the powder detergent (or a liquid, or anything not in a "pac", you can put detergent (if you wish) in the pre-wash dispenser of your dishwasher to allow for better cleaning. I use this powder in a half-dose, that is to say, the total amount used would fill one chamber in my dishwasher, so I fill each one with half the amount. That's what it was designed for, and you should use that feature, something that is impossible to do with a "pac".

Unfortunately, there is no direct comparison as to how many loads you get between each one. In my guesstimation, I buy about 3 of these boxes of powdered detergent a year, at a price of about $5 each, for a total of $15. So I get the same performance, for $8 less a year, simply by not buying into false advertising, and my dishes are clean and sparkling just the same. It's easy to save money by simply not "following the herd".

In this day and age, Corporate America and the big conglomerations, will lie, cheat, and steal their way through business, stealing your hard-earned dollars. There are no holds barred. So it up to you, as a consumer, to vote with your wallet.

Another interesting fact is that the "Smartly" brand detergent from Target offers a 100% SATISFACTION GUARANTEE. Cascade, the #1 Leading National Brand, makes no such claim! (I am sure, however, that if you have a problem with their product, they will gladly send you coupons for more of their inferior product, that no store will readily accept.)

These days, since the store brands, generic brands, and "no-frills" brands out there do not have a big advertising campaign, they can spend the money to make their products work better. Time and time and time again, I have found that many of the lesser-known brands work AS GOOD AS, or EVEN BETTER THAN, the "Leading National Brand". Don't buy into it. Save a few dollars here on detergent, a few dollars there on something else, and soon enough, you will have more extra money than you know what to do with.
