The Godfather is one of the most iconic films in cinematic history. But did you know that many of the characters in the film were based on real people?

The character of Vito Corleone, the head of the Corleone family, was based on real-life mafia boss Frank Costello. Like Vito, Costello was a powerful and feared figure in the criminal underworld.
The portrayal of Vito in the film was mostly accurate, although the character was portrayed as more honorable and likeable than the real-life Costello.

Michael Corleone: The youngest son of Vito Corleone, Michael was based on the real-life mobster Salvatore “Bill” Bonanno.
Joseph got his son to go to law school — just like Vito had his son Michael do. Despite his father's wishes, Michael — like Bill — found his way into the mob life.

Sonny Corleone, Vito's hot-headed son, was based on real-life mobster Carmine Galante. Like Sonny, Galante was known for his short temper and violent outbursts.

Tom Hagen, the Corleone family's lawyer, is thought to be loosely based on the real-life gangsters Joseph N. Gallo and Frank DeSimone. Gallo was the consigliere for the Gambino crime family, while DeSimone started his career as a lawyer, but ended up becoming the boss of the Los Angeles crime family.

Luca Brasi, the Corleone family's enforcer, was based on real-life mafia hitman Albert Anastasia. Like Brasi, Anastasia was feared for his ruthless methods and violent reputation.

Moe Greene, the casino mogul in The Godfather, mirrors the life and death of real-life mobster, Bugsy Siegel. In the film, Greene is credited with putting Las Vegas on the map, just as Siegel did in reality by building the Flamingo, now the oldest resort on the Las Vegas Strip. However, Greene and Siegel both meet the same untimely demise, succumbing to the ruthless world of organized crime.

The character of Salvatore Tessio in The Godfather may have been inspired by the real-life Gaspar DiGregorio, a close associate of Joseph Bonanno who later turned against him during the tumultuous "Banana War" of the 1960s. This behind-the-scenes look at Tessio's inspiration offers a glimpse into the complex and often treacherous world of organized crime.

While the characters in The Godfather were based on real-life figures, the film took some creative liberties with their stories and personalities. However, it is clear that the film was heavily influenced by the real-life world of the mafia.
