The Ocean Clean Up with Boyan Slat | Climate Changers

The fight against climate change and environmental degradation is the greatest challenge of our time. We at Surround Vision think it’s time we celebrate incredible climate change innovators with a series of VR films to be shared globally across Mobile & social media, on high-end VR platforms and at Global Climate events.

Boyan Slat is a legend in the green movement, an eco-innovator and pioneer who’s designing and developing the first feasible method to rid the world’s oceans of plastic.

In 2013 he founded the Ocean Cleanup initiative, a system that utilises ocean currents to concentrate plastic waste and reduce the clean-up time from millennium to a few years.

The Ocean Cleanup launched its first full-scale operating system to take on the Great Pacific Garbage Patch from San Francisco bay on September 8th this year and Surround Vision was there at the heart of the action to capture this defining moment.

The system consists of a 600-meter-long floater that sits at the surface of the water and a tapered 3-meter-deep skirt attached below. The floater provides buoyancy to the system and prevents plastic from flowing over it, while the skirt stops debris from escaping underneath. As the system moves through the water, the plastic continues to collect within the boundaries of the U-shaped system.

By utilizing the ocean currents, their passive drifting systems are estimated to clean up half the Great Pacific Garbage Patch in 5 years’ time
