Visual Review - Hyundai Bayon (2022)

The new compact SUV from Hyundai is called: Bayon and it lends its name from the capital of the French Basque Region: ‘Bayonne’. And it’s typical for the way the brand names its cars after city names: (Tucson, Santa Fe and so on).

In line with its new design language: Sensuous Sportiness, the designers used triangular and arrow-shaped elements that make this car stand out on the road.

It is the newest and in size smallest SUV that the Korean brand has to offer but it has loads of space onboard. It really is roomy in there which is a good thing. And with its height of 1.5 meters it also has a lot of headroom.

It is a comfortable ride too, the seats provide enough support in all areas and you can last for hours in them. The somewhat dark interior of this test car and in particular the dashboard has mainly has black and greyish tints but it’s thanks to the complex shapes that it doesn’t look dull.

A big multifunctional center screen provides you with all the information and adjustable settings that you would ever need. A real treat for the gadget fans out there. It also gives you access to all of the safety features of the car which are a lot. The list of abbreviations just goes on and on: (LKA, LFA, NSCC, HBA, LVDA, BCW…) etcetera, etcetera. It all comes down to making life easier and safer on the road. All of these systems are here to help you drive more safely and take a bit of load off your shoulders.

The Bayon has a 3-cilinder, 100 hp petrol engine aided by an 48V battery pack delivering its max power at 4.500 rpm and has 171 Nm of torque at 1.500 rpm. 0 to 100 km/h is done in 10.7 seconds and its top speed is 183 km/h. The combination of a petrol engine and electric motor also makes this car a ‘mild hybrid’ that regenerates energy under braking and has a ‘coast’-function which disengages the petrol engine when the throttle is released to minimize fuel consumption.

In Sport mode it has a nice little trick up its sleeve, the car has a rev-matching function which blips the throttle on downshifts so that its power doesn’t lock up the front axle and with an additional benefit that it eliminates the turbo-‘gap’ or -lag.

The car has the rare characteristic of absorbing speed bumps and uneven roads perfectly but also stays very upright when cornering and isn’t shy to go a bit quicker in the corners, doing that well too.

The compact SUV has a well thought-out interior where everything seems to be in the right place. Handles in the ceiling, lighting in the dashboard cabin, all sorts of cubby spaces to store things in, it’s all very practical.

The Hyundai Bayon is a very complete, up-to-date, comfortable and spacious all-round SUV.
