Mercury Racing 450R Outboard Testing on MTI 340X Cat

Testing of the Mercury Racing 450R supercharged 4.6L V8 outboard on a Marine Technology Inc. (MTI) 340X cat at Old Hickory Lake, TN.

The power of this engine is unbelievable. Acceleration is superior to any other outboard I've experienced on large cats such as this MTI. Former three-engine installations will now need only two, and performance will still increase. The 450R is just an insane beast of an engine.

It seems quiet in the video, and indeed it is from within the boat, but out back it sounds nasty, but in a very good way. It has a sound of a V8, but with the crackle of a high-performance race outboard.

The 450R is the latest and most powerful version of Mercury's 4.6-liter V8 four-stroke engine platform. The 300R was the first four-stroke outboard to truly surpass its two-stroke equivalent (OptiMax 300XS) in every performance category, while maintaining the same weight. The 450R is the supercharged version of this engine. Its upper cowl dimensions are exactly the same as the 300R, which is a remarkable engineering achievement.
