Mercury Racing 450R 4.6-Liter Supercharged Outboard Testing on Midnight Express 43. A total beast!

The Mercury Racing 4.6-liter 450R is now the most powerful and technologically advanced production performance outboard ever created. I experienced this monster of an outboard first-hand on a multitude of boats during testing on June 19, 2019. The 450R is the same weight as the current inline-6 400R, and possesses 40% more torque. You really feel it, too. The upper cowl dimensions are the same as the 300R. Acceleration is savagely brutal, yet running qualities are surgically fine-tuned. The exhaust note is musical to anybody that likes to hear the sound of real power. Mercury Racing once again redefines expectations on what modern four-stroke performance is capable of in an engine that has no equal. It is put simply, a beast of an outboard.

The Midnight Express 43 is a boat that impressed me immensely. Large, luxurious, and beautiful, yet fast with turning performance normally reserved more race-oriented boats. It handles turns like a boat that’s much smaller. We were cruising effortlessly at 75 MPH with 10 people aboard and our gear, with more to be had. The fully-infused hull’s turning capabilities surprised me, with no aeration, spraying, or loss of tracking during hard cornering. This is a performance boat I every sense of the definition, except the penalties in refinement we sometimes associate with such high performance machines.
