La Gran Guerra, como era denominada antes de que sucediera la Segunda Guerra Mundial, fue un conflicto a escala global. Comenzó en Europa e involucró los territorios coloniales en África, Asia e Oceanía.

Dos bloques enfrentados: la Triple Alianza formada por Alemania, Austria Hungría y El imperio otomano, y la Triple Entente formada por Francia, Inglaterra y Rusia. La guerra dejó 10 millones de soldados muertos y otros 21 millones resultaron heridos y el colapso de todos los imperios europeos exceptuando Gran Bretaña.
