Tarde en la víspera de Navidad, la Fuerza Expedicionaria Británica escuchó a las tropas alemanas en las trincheras frente a ellos cantando villancicos, vieron linternas y pequeños abetos a lo largo de sus trincheras. Se empezaron a gritar mensajes entre las trincheras. Al día siguiente, soldados británicos y alemanes se reunieron en tierra de nadie e intercambiaron regalos, tomaron fotografías y algunos incluso jugaron al fútbol. Fue un raro pero mágico momento de paz y armonía en medio de uno de los eventos más atroces del siglo XX.
