EVEREST BASE CAMP TREK - WINTER TREK TO EVEREST BASE CAMP

Everest base camp trek is a dream trip for most of the trekkers and they are from sea level, aiming to reach Everest base camp above 5000m, flying to Kathmandu 1350m and next day flying to Lukla 2840m, where the actual trek starts, and there is already a chance to get altitude sickness symptoms before starting the trek. To avoid altitude sickness ON Everest base camp trek acclimatization is very important, that’s why we do the first day of trek easy and short, mostly going downhill. Trekking from Lukla to Phakding about 8 km and 200m descend to Phakding. Which helps to acclimatize your body at below 3000m of altitude.

Day 2 of the Everest base camp trek is a tough one, need to climb 800m to Namche bazaar 3440m, which is a big jump altitude wise and it takes about 6-7 hours of the walk.. Most of the trekkers find it a tough day, last 3 hours' climb to Namche Bazaar is like never-ending, as trekkers climb altitude affects and make it harder. But no worries slow and steady everyone can do it, take your time drink plenty of water and climb slow.

The good thing is, we plan the itinerary with enough acclimatization time and after the tough climb to Namche, the next day there is easy going day, trekkers do the acclimatization hike around Namche Bazaar, same time there is an opportunity to capture the breathtaking views of the Himalayas including mt Everest with your open eyes. This acclimatization hike will be like a sightseeing hike, which makes you feel like you are walking in heaven. And then back to guest house stay overnight at the same place. Oh yes, don’t forget, having enough rest and drinking more fluids are very important to adjust to a higher altitude.
Day 4 of Everest base camp trek is not tough as day 2nd, first 2hours is Nepali flat, easy-going and very scenic, every corner gives you different looks, the amazing Himalayas on your right-hand side and mt Everest, mt Lhotse, Nuptse just in front of you. Just take it easy, walk slow, and have a sip of water every 10 min, you will be there just like this no worries.

Day 5 of the EBC trek you will go above 4000m and there is a higher chance you may get altitude sickness, you will be staying at Dingboche village at an elevation of 4400m. From day 5 onwards there will be less vegetation, thin air, cold and dry. Try to keep warm, don’t try to show off, and walk with a T-shirt on, you may catch a cold and you will be busy coughing only. As higher you go you need to drink more fluid and have enough rest. Trekking wise it’s not bad mostly gradual up and there is not a big climb for hours, and enjoy the close-up views of the Himalayas.
As trekkers cross the 4000m, it is better to have another acclimatization day. On this day you will be doing some small hike to acclimatize your body at surrounding altitude which helps for the next day's hike to go further up. Same time it’s like a photography hike, you can enjoy the 360 view of the Himalayas.

After Dingboche 2 more days to reach the base camp and that will be the tough hike of your life. You can’t do much to avoid altitude sickness. So take it easy, go slow and drink more. Most of the trekkers start getting altitude symptoms after Dingboche. Trekking to Lobuche 4910m, 600m ascend which is a lot. Distance-wise only about 7km but altitude doesn’t let you walk fast and it may take 5-6 hours. But it is ok there is a whole day ahead no need to rush, isn’t it? Once trekkers reach the louche, everyone starts saying I got a slight headache, I am not feeling like eating, I am getting nausea, etc. No worries, drink warm water and have rest a couple of hours, your symptoms will go away, if symptoms are still there take some first aid medicine, which may help to reduce the symptoms. Be positive and relax.

The Everest base camp day, tough, cold, breathing difficulties, headache, and trekking over 5000m heading to the base camp of the top of the word. Don’t forget, your positive mindset is very important to complete this journey. BUT at the same time, if you are badly kicked by altitude sickness, you may have to give up and turn back down too. Always keep in mind if you ignore the altitude sickness it may kill you. Listen to your body, be honest to yourself and decide whether you should go up or down.
Walking towards the base camp is not easy, walking on the glacier between the boulders and loose rocks makes you exhausted, at the same time due to thin air and less oxygen you may think, why I am doing this. But once you reach base camp, you may get emotional, you feel like yes I did it.
