MT EVEREST EXPEDITIN AND COVID 19
Mt Everest and covid 19 what's going on?
Can you imagine getting Covid - 19 on 5,500 meters where 50% less oxygen than the sea level?
"Everest Base camp is like a small city nowadays," estimated there are around 1,200 people at the camp this year and with this crowd making social distancing is not easy. "Normally there's a lot of socializing, events, base camp parties, and teams are visiting other teams and making new friends,"
covid 19 and Everest is an economy in and of itself, with Nepal charging climbers $11,000 for a permit to climb the tallest mountain in the world.
This year, the government issued 408 climbing permits, the most since the peak was first climbed in 1953,
At least 17 climbers have tested COVID positive for the coronavirus after being evacuated off the mountain, an official with the Himalayan Rescue Association informed on Wednesday
The exact number of active cases in base camp is unknown since climbers aren't being required to undergo regular testing,
Erland Ness, a Norwegian climber who was evacuated from Everest Base Camp in late April, confirmed he tested COVID positive on arrival at a hospital in Nepal's capital, Kathmandu.
Luckily those who came in close contact with Ness have tested negative.
Since then, Polish climber Pawel Michalski said in a Facebook post that "30 people have already been evacuated" from base camp and subsequently tested positive.
Despite the pandemic having come to Everest and Nepal witnessing a second wave of infections, aspiring summiteers have not been discouraged.
