Huawei Matebook 2020 13 & 14 Review | Great Quality in a Small Package
Not so long ago, we ran a review of the Huawei Matebook X and these two stunning laptops from Huawei are basically the baby siblings of that awesome that machine.
They come in at around two-thirds of the price of the Matebook X, but for that money, you can still expect to get three-quarters of the overall power along with many other common elements.
As we're coming to expect from Huawei, these two machines give an incredible build quality that comes really very close to the premium Apple MacBook feel. The design is great, too. They're slick, well-rounded machines that feel every bit worth the price tag.
The 13" version we tested came with a modest 10th Gen Intel® Core™ i5-10210U Processor, which is a quad-core with boost speeds up to 4.2ghz. That's plenty of power for a great deal of light, everyday uses including photo and video editing. It's also a really impressive spec for the tiny machine that it is. It comes in both 8GB and 16GB flavours with either Intel graphics or Nvidia mx250 options.
The 14" version we had for this review is interestingly running team red with a 8 core AMD Ryzen™ 7 4800H, which makes it an absolute powerhouse for such a portable machine. It's available in either 8GB or 16GB ram and houses an integrated Radeon graphics card.
Now, you can't really expect to be doing any serious gaming or heavyweight video editing on either of these machines, but that said, they both have more than enough power for regular photo editing and lighter video work. Neither machine has an SD card slot so you will need to use a dongle if you're planning on using these for any kind of photo or video work, directly from your camera's memory.
The super-sharp screens are both pretty stunning, boasting an amazing 100% sRGB colour accurate 2K touch display, which look beautiful when watching films, gaming or editing any kind of visual content.
Both have superb battery life. With light tasks, you will find that both of the machines will last for almost a full working day on a single charge. If they do run down, you'll have the opportunity to top up with the [included] 65W USB-C fast chargers.
One thing that would make these machines perfect would be the inclusion of a thunderbolt connection. As you can see, the 14" comes with a beast of a CPU; pair that with an EGPU and it could turn it into an amazing do-it-all rig.
4.5 stars out of 5
