Gumball Transalps Rally 2021 Day 4 - La Sambuy to Verbier

Day 4 of the #gumball2021 - I drove with Vincent and his friend Sebastian to La Sambuy, and we picked up Jaap and Geoff en route. We met up with Mincek, Rhys, Feite and Mike at the Col du Sambuy and we launched with a goal of Switzerland, and perhaps Fiesch. A strong inversion made it very difficult to climb out on the Aravis but I came across with a bit more height than the others and connected at ridge height - a lesson I learned last year - and that gave me just enough advantage to eventually climb out. Once high it was relatively plain sailing and I reached a max alt of 3300 over the glaciers near the Aiguille de Chardonnet at the NE end of the Chamonix valley - absolutely amazing scenery!! Mind Blown as they say! Then I glided in to Verbier and landed close to the 12th tee on the golf course! Bit naughty really but I wanted to minimise the hike up. After an ice cream, beer and salad at a restaurant I continued hiking and was 70% of the way when a couple of pilots gave me a lift to the Croix de Coeur where they had a long soaring session in perfect smooth conditions. I had a brief flight too, but having already flown for 5 hours I landed after 30 mins to pitch my tent.

At 2200m it’s the chilliest I’ve been for a while, but the views are amazing! The whisky’s helping though!

Tomorrow’s looking good too, so hopefully the other guys can make it into Switzerland… and I’ll go as far as I can then probably call it a day as Friday’s looking windy then it goes downhill…
