Gumball Transalps Rally 2021 Days 5&6 - Verbier to Furka Pass

Day 5 of the #gumball2021 - I awoke too early to a beautiful sunrise, took a picture, then fell back to sleep again! It took a while to dry the dew and condensation off the tent, and after a cuppa and the obligatory Pro-Nutra breakfast I hiked up to the launch at 2350m (I camped at 2200m so not too much effort). It looked like it was going to be a slow day and it was! I eventually took off just after 1pm once I’d seen people getting high on the cliffs at the back of Verbier. But it still took over an hour to get high enough to leave the Verbier arena…

And what a route I took - deep into the big mountains on the south side of the Martigny valley - just incredible scenery! Mind Blown again!!! 😂 Only one sketchy moment pushing into a strong N’ly valley wind trying to make my way out of the big stuff - contemplated landing high but v glad I persisted as the rest of the flight past Brig and Fiesch and into the Goms was pretty mellow. I made it to the Furka Pass but at 7pm I couldn’t find a climb to get me over… another 100m might have done it, but it wasn’t to be so I headed back and landed in the campsite at Reckingen. The owner wasn’t best pleased but I apologised and made my peace and all’s good!

The beer in one of the photos was given to me last night by a pilot but it was warm and too late, but after 6.5 hrs in the air at altitudes up to 3700m it was nice and cold when I landed!

The forecast for tomorrow is pretty rubbish - very stable - so that’s my Gumball finished this year - what brilliant fun it’s been, especially with more people involved. Talking of them, it was another difficult day in the Annecy area, but better progress was made by most I believe, with Geoff making it into Switzerland (from Chamonix) and a couple of others reaching Chamonix I think 👍

Who’s up for next year’s Gumball when hopefully COVID won’t be such an issue (pretty sure I said that last year…)
