Back in my day, maritime disasters did not appear live on television and the internet as breaking news. Come to think of it, there was no TV or internet. It may have been the first sinking broadcast live, as the twitter-verse lit up as passengers used social media to call friends and relatives. PAUSE Sadly, 32 people perished because of the hubris one man. The captain, Francesco Schettino (shit-ee-no), The Costa Concordia was foolishly off course when it struck a rock near the Italian island of Giglio (Geel-yo). The boat sank within sight of the harbour, but not before the Captain had deserted ship. It took years and imaginative engineering excellence to remove it. Getting in and out of the harbour, even with its long pier is treacherous when the wind and waves line up to punish boaters, the waves crash into the boats with huge savagery. Leaving port is hard enough.
Entering port is a combination of daring, skill and foolishness. The boats often surf the crest of the wave as they zoom into the narrow channel.
