On February 16, 1981, 19-year-old Arne Cheyenne Johnson, a regular teenager with no previous history of violence or criminal record, stabbed his landlord Alan Bono to death with a pocketknife. After he was arrested Arne made the incredible claim that the Devil Made Him Do It. In court Arne told how his possession started with the 11-year-old brother of his fiancée, Debbie Glatzel, who repeatedly encountered an old man who would taunt him, things got worse and after calling in Ed and Lorraine Warren it was concluded David was possessed by the Devil.

After exorcisms were performed on David, he was still suffering so Arne Johnson started taunting the demonic presence, telling it “Take me on, leave my little buddy alone”. In court Arne’s attorneys, aided by the Warrens, tried to enter a plea of “not guilty by reason of demonic possession.” It was the first time in history that a defense like this was used in an American courtroom.

However judge Robert Callahan ultimately rejected the plea, saying it was impossible to prove and Arne Johnson was convicted of first-degree manslaughter and sentenced to 10 to 20 years in prison, but only served five. Whilst Johnson was in jail Gerald Brittle’s book ‘The Devil in Connecticut’, was published with help from Lorraine Warren and Arne Johnson’s case was revealed to be the true story behind The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It
