To catch wild raccoon in a live trap you need to think about bait first. Use anything that has a strong odor such as fish like tuna or salmon, sardins or even fresh fish. Raccoon are scavengers and are not trap shy, if there is food near them, they will investigate.

Use a good live trap with a quality latch mechanism that operates under relatively easy sensitivity. A quality trap will be reflected in the price you pay for it. The latch and the size of the wires will tell you if it's a good trap or not. Get a good one, as these will last a lifetime easily!

Most life traps run around $100-$250 and you can often find them on sale near the end of the fall. I own 5 live traps and can catch anything from a squirrel to a small coyote. Get various traps, but make sure you use the right size for the animal you want to get. Big raccoon can weight up to 50 pounds, so don't get the smallest trap.

Raccoon carry all kinds of nasty parasites and their feces is particularly nasty so use gloves when handling them.

To clean raccoon you need to understand where the glands are located. Find them in the front armpits, the rear leg in the join fold and along the tongue in 3 pairs to make 6. I have an unlisted video available for members of the channel to see these get removed.

We grinding up the raccoon meat and made really tasty burgers combined with wild spices. Raccoon meat is becoming one of my favourites!

The fat quality of the meat is great and if you get a big fall raccoon, you can also render the fat out of them for cooking as I did with my bear.

You might not think raccoon is edible, but we have learned over the years that raccoon, when properly cleaned and de-glanded, tastes really great.
