McNeil River Wildlife Sanctuary – 9 June, 2016 - "Not Quinoa"

A wave of red salmon are forcing their way up through the “riffles” of Mikfik Creek, trying to reach their spawning grounds in Mikfik lake well over a mile upstream. There are several more obstacles in their path, not the least of which are brown bears who know where best to catch them.. Most of the bears that visit the McNeil Sanctuary are given names by the staff for identification and tracking purposes. Quinoa is a young adult female with a scar on her nose by her left eye. This female looks like her but she has a scar on her nose by her right eye. Who she is exactly was a bit of a mystery, but for ID purposes during our visit, she was known as “Not Quinoa”.

We are no more than 40 meters from her during this sequence. She knows we are there but because the bears at McNeil are conditioned to seeing a small group of people (no more than 10 visitors and a guide), always together and always doing the same, non-threatening things, she pays us no attention. Instead, she is intent on her own bear activities, in this case, fishing.
