London Monopoly Locations: Strand to Piccadilly Circus [Part 3]

In this Monopoly tour of London, I visit each of the places on the original UK Monopoly board and share the history behind each of the properties. Here's where I went in Part 3:

1. Strand - This name comes from the old English word “Strond” which means “edge of the river” as the Thames use to reach up that high. Famous authors and poets lived in the area including Virginia Woolf and Charles Dickens. The now disused Strand Underground station, that linked to Holborn, still has an operational wooden lift. You can find the statue of Samual Johnson, the man who wrote the first English dictionary, here.

2. Fleet Street - The river Fleet ran from Hampstead into the Thames at Blackfriars Bridge. In Anglo-Saxon Fleet means "river inlet".

3. Trafalgar Square - Built in the 1840’s to commemorate the British victory at the Battle of Trafalgar. Trafalgar Square was almost called King William the IV Square. Opposite in the north east corner of the square you can find St Martin-in-the-Fields which was designed by Sir Christopher Wren.

4. Fenchurch Street Station - Named after a church that stood here but was burnt down during the Great Fire of 1666. The word “Fen” might come from the Latin word for 'hay' as there use to be a hay market here as well. Another opinion is that because of the wet and boggy nature of the area it got its name from the East Anglian Fens.

5. Leicester Square - Leicester Square was named after Leicester House which in turn was named after Sir Robert Sydney, the Earl of Leicester in1670. In the middle of the square is statue of William Shakespeare.

6. Coventry Street - Links Leicester Square and Piccadilly Circus and is named after Henry Coventry who was the secretary of state to King Charles the 2nd in 1671.

7. Piccadilly Circus - The name derives from the word "Picadils" which were collars made famous by a tailor in the 16th century. His shop was in this area.
