Enjoy a 360° 3D Virtual Tour around Castillo de San Marcos in St. Augustine, Florida!
Built by the Spanish (using indigenous slave laborers) in the late 1600's to protect the colony St. Augustine after repeated pirate attacks, Castillo de San Marcos is the oldest masonry fort in the United States!
The fort resisted multiple attacks including two sieges by the British, and has a unique secret:
The fort's walls are made of a marine limestone called coquina. A soft stone made of ancient seashells, coquina absorbed the impact from cannon balls instead of cracking or crumbling. This was a complete coincidence. Coquina was the only stone that was locally available. The Spanish likely had no idea of it's unique defensive properties until the fort was attacked for the first time!
Castillo de San Marcos changed hands several times. From the Spanish to the British, then back to the Spanish and finally to the United States of America.
In 1933 the fort was made into a National Park.
